604 Northern Territory Education Advisory Council

Description

The Education Advisory Council was one of three statutory advisory councils established at the Minister's [Jim Robertson] request within the NT Education Department to advise on matters relating to the provision of education services in the Northern Territory. The Council had twelve members appointed for two year terms drawn from all sectors of education and community groups across the Northern Territory, with its inaugural chairman being Mr Ronald James Kirkman. Provision was made for the further appointments of an aboriginal and a student member bringing the total membership to fourteen. One member had to be from the Department of Education and not less than two members had to reside outside of Darwin.
The Council was to assist in shaping a coordinated system of education from the pre-school years to Year 12 and beyond to post school educational instiutions for Northern Territorians. The issues addressed were diverse ranging from curriculum issues and the Teacher Registration Board to career counselling, boarding, corporal punishment, truancy and infection control.

Creation

Proposed membership of the Council was presented to the Executive Council on 12 November 1979 and approved by the Administrator on that date. The first meeting was held in Darwin on 12 December 1979 to establish the aims, philosophy and roles of members.

The Northern Territory Library holds Annual reports from this body from 1979 until 1998 either in hardcopy and/or in Territory Stories. Can find no evidence for Council existing after this date.
